What is psychopharmacology?

Psychopharmacology is the practice of using psychotropic medication to treat patients with a variety of mental health disorders. Some classes of medication include:

  • SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)
  • SNRIs (selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors
  • Tricyclic antidepressants
  • MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors)
  • Neuroleptics (antipsychotic medications)
  • Mood stabilizers
  • Anticonvulsant medications
  • Benzodiazepines

Psychotropic medication is hypothesized to work by changing neurotransmitter levels in the brain. These brain chemicals, which include serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, aid in the formation of connections between neurons (nerve cells) in your brain. Low levels of these neurotransmitters are thought to have a negative impact on your mood. For many people, psychotropic medication is an invaluable treatment option. Medication can help to alleviate the severity of your symptoms and when combined with psychotherapy, can lead to better outcomes. Rappore's psychiatrists will carefully assess your symptoms and, if necessary, provide medication customized to your specific needs. The goal is to optimize efficacy while minimizing potential side effects.

After considering lifestyle changes, psychotherapy, and/or other medications, we may prescribe benzodiazepines and other controlled medications. First, we review clients' responses to our research-based questionnaire, Mental Health Fingerprint®, and if indicated, specific symptom checklists.  If it is determined that one of these medications should be considered, an appointment for an in-person examination at one of our Assessment Centers is scheduled. We do not prescribe stimulants such as Adderall, Vyvanse, Dexedrine, Ritalin, and Concerta to new patients.
